Corvette T56 Shifting into Reverse

I have a 2000 C5 coupe with 205K on the speedometer. I recently started experiencing difficulty in putting the car into reverse..first with gear grinding and often it refusing to go in at all….I’ve adjusted the shifter several times but it makes little difference…There is no difficulty shifting in any other gear…the clutch was replaced approximately 5k miles ago Can you help?…Answer:Based on our experience with the T56 indicates the problems are related to mileage, worn bearings allow shafts to move slightly also worn syncro/slider can contribute to this problem.  We would suggest pulling the transmission and sending it to the factory  to be repaired.

A remanufactured exchange unit is $2395.00 exchange plus core deposit of $1000.00 and we assume your existing transmission could be repaired for around $1200 – $1500 plus freight.

AX5 Conversion to AX15

I am having problems with my 1986 Jeep AX5 , can you provide information on the AX5, and I have heard about a transmission model upgrade to the AX15 can you provide info on this conversion project also?

The AX5 transmission was made by Aisin Warner, is a top shifting overdrive unit length is 24 inches. The AX5 is a manual shift, five-speed transmission lightweight transmission. This transmission was used 1984 to 2006 Jeep XJ, YJ & TJ models. It’s found in AMC 150 (2.5L) I4 engine and It had been also found behind the GM 2.8L. The AX5 is traditionally used and it is regarded as a light-weight split-case, top shifting, overdrive transmission. The AX5 is completely synchronized in all gears. All gears are helical cut. The majority of Jeep owners begin modifications with larger tires, altering gear ratios and head for the dunes. Many realize that the very first significant malfunction occurs with the AX5 transmission, it’ has proven to be questionable for off-road operation, and problems usually are not uncommon. The AX4 is the same light duty design tranny with no 5th gear.

AX15 Transmission

Aisin Warner also manufactured this tranny. The output shaft on this transmission is 23 spline and projects approximately .400inch. The Jeep AX15 transmission is really a medium-duty, standard shift, five-speed transmission utilized in 1989-1999 Jeep XJ, YJ & TJ versions behind the 258/4.0L motors. This transmission was also used in the Dodge 2.5L Dakota. The effectiveness of the AX15 makes if very popular with the off road network. The AX15 has got the same overall case length as the AX5 24.00 inches. The output shaft is 23 spline and projects approx .400”. Gear ratio for the AX15 is 3.83, 2.33, 1.44, 1.00, 0.79 ratios.
