Automatic to Manual Conversion 1981 El Camino

I have a Chevrolet El Camino 1981 with a 350  and automatic transmission.

Question:

This car has a  small block in it with saginaw 3 and 4 speed transmissions and partsthe automatic trans and I was wonder if if you part number MTGM015 would bolt up and be a good 4 speed for this application?

Answer:

You are correct our part number MTGM015 the Saginaw 4 speed will work for your application.  We can provide a re-manufactured transmission with a 12 month warranty, your cost is $950.00 outright, no core required plus freight.  You will need to supply bell housing and shift linkage.

Transfer Case Failure

Transfer Case models  NP136, NP236, NP246 , NP261 and NP263 all suffer form an  engineering design defect.  The oil pump MW52007_casesaverover time can wear a hole in the rear case half, causing loss of fluid and total destruction of your transfer case.  Repairing this damage will require at a minimum a new rear case, bearing overhaul kit costing you as much as $700.00.  A replacement transfer case can cost you between $850.00 to $1500.00.  Don’t leave home without this critical part upgrade.

I would like to know what nv4500_newtransmission and clutch y5.9L diesel in to my 1991 Chevrolet 3/4 ton 4wdou would recommend when installing a 1993 Cummins ?

Chevrolet Silverado HD 2003 Transfer Case Problem

I have a Chevrolet Silverado HD 2003 np261_transfercase3/4 ton 6.6 Diesel 4WD.

Question:

The transfer case blew at 198K.   It had the common pin hole problem in the rear case caused by the oil pump rubbing on the case at 16oK.  Now its wearing out the range shift fork causing complete failure, it sounds like a binding when driving, It usually happens when it is under a load, hauling over 9K in 2 high or this last time in 4WD driving in about 15 inches of snow, but always under load can you help me?

Answer:

Based on our re-manufacturing experience with the NP261XHD and from your description it sounds like an input shaft engagement teeth wear problem.  This resulting issue is premature fork wear.  The following is a list of parts recommended it you choose to repair the transfer case:

  • Input Shaft 29 spline part number MWTNV43996 your cost $125.00.
  • Seal Kit part number TRSTSK261XHD your cost is $55.75.
  • Mode Fork Aluminum cast #28624 with pads part number MWTNV27756 your cost is $68.51.
  • Range Fork Aluminum cast #17833 your cost $28.98.

This list assumes that you changed bearings at last tear down, if not order our part number MWTBK371A your cost $184.94.

A second option would be to replace the existing transfer case with a factory re-manufactured unit.  Order our part number TCGM041, this transfer case has a 12 month warranty, your cost is $1326.67 plus $350.00 core deposit plus freight.

AX5 to AX15 Transmission Conversion

I have a Jeep 1992 2.5lt 4WD I am in the middle of an AX5 to AX15 transmission swap. .

Question:  I have the AX15 with a Dakota bell housing which bolts up just fine to the 2.5L in my Jeep Wrangler.  The AX15 has a 14 spline input shaft.  Can you tell me what pressure plate and clutch disc to use with this application?

Answer:

The Correct clutch kit is our part number MWT05-089 it is the Dodge Dakota 14 spline clutch kit (9 1/8″ OD with 1″ spline diameter.  Your cost is $145.00 plus S&H.  This pressure plate should be the one you need, worst case scenario you will have to re-drill the flywheel.

Broken Tail Housing Ford 1996 ZF542 or ZF547

I have a F-350 1996 7.5L Manual 1 Ton 4 Wheel Drive

Question:

The rear 4×4 case housing is cracked. what concerns or issues might I run into by leaving the transmission in the truck and remove the drive shafts and t-case only. By looking online the problems I see would be lining up the shifting forks in there proper locations. Money is tight and I rather do it myself than have a shop charge me more in labor than the actual part.

Answer:

Removing the rear driveshaft is not recommended, only in an emergency to get home, not as a daily driver.

This is a ZF transmission it could be a ZF542 (casting number 1307) or a ZF547 (casting number 1317) 5 speed and all internal parts are loaded into the tail housing so the tail housing cannot be removed with the transmission in the vehicle as the front case needs to be removed to access the gear train and then the gear train can be removed from the extension housing.

We understand tight money, we only have new extension housing (no used housings available), your cost on the new housing is  $299.00 and if you order it the factory technical rep walk you through changing it once you have the transmission out and on the bench

You will also need front and rear seal and 3 detent caps (minimum parts for this repair) are the only other parts you will need and that will be an additional $10 plus freight.

Once the transmission is out and on the bench you will need the following tools.
13mm socket
5mm Allen socket
6mm Allen socket
Hammer
Screwdriver seal driver or something “socket” to install seals

NV4500 Dodge 5 Speed 5th gear come loose on the shaft!!

Short splines on the 5th gear main shaft is the major design defect.  What Dodge owners have said:  “Mine came loose and we pulled the back cover off  and sure enough, there was parts in the bottom and the nut and 5th gear were backed off”.
“Hauling a heavy trailer cross country most of the year  my 1 ton Dodge pickup, it seems like every 1-2 years the main shaft nut backs off of the main shaft. The last rebuilt NV4500 lasted only 8 months before it started having fifth gear problem. The builders I bought it from claimed to have some sort of a lock to stop the problem.

Our recommended fix is a replacement shaft that has a longer splined area, it is thought that most of the problems are as a result of lugging the engine, i.e. say when approaching a stop light thinking that it will turn green you slow down the light changes to green and with shifting down you power through the light!

NV4500updated_mainshaft_dwgSee the engineering drawing for the updated main shaft design for the NV4500.  This updated main shaft increases the spline length by 1″ and we use a retaining clip to accomplish a 100% sure fix for this problem.   For the 2WD main shaft kit order our part number MWT4741468-R your cost is  $199.95.  The 4WD mainshaft kit is our part number MWT4882318-R your cost is $199.95 plus S&H.

Our kit includes a newly designed main-shaft, retaining clip package and a new main shaft retaining nut.  When installed into the main case of the transmission, the main shaft tolerance should be .002″ to .006″.

The NV4500 is capable of handling more HP with upgrade. NV4500_old_new_MS

  • Upgrade the input shaft to 1 3/8″
  • We can provide cryogenic treating to shafts and gears and increase the strength by 30 %.
