Question:  my problem is after saginaw_transmission2 years on a rebuild my Saginaw 4 speed has started grinding a little when shifting into fourth gear . if i double clutch it , it will go in without grinding . it does not grind in any other gear .it is worse at high rpm . i am thinking it is a syncro problem , not a clutch problem . sure could use an expert opinion to help resolve this issue .

Answer: Yes defiantly could be a syncro problem and could have been caused by a worn or damaged pilot  We recommend the following parts:

  • Part Number 100759 syncro ring your cost $10.80
  • Part Number GS301-55  your cost $9.00 GASKET KIT plus S&H

1973 Nova Saginaw Shifting Problem

April 10, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have a 1973 Chevrolet Nova 350 engine.

saginaw_transmission

Saginaw

Question:  the shifting from 1st to 2nd grinds a little, the 3rd to 2nd and then to 1st i need to be in a certain RPM range in order to not grind. is it signs of a worn clutch or just the age of the trans?

Answer:  We believe your transmission is a cast iron Saginaw from your description it sounds like the syncros are bad… 1st gear is non synchronized so that is normal for first but not 2nd gear.  It is possible that excessive bearing wear is allowing the shafts to move front to back and contributes to the shifting problem.  We suggest you order our Bearing Rebuild Kit Saginaw (4 speed) with Syncro Rings our part number MWT115AWS your cost is $147.85 plus S&H.

If you need additional technical assistance just give us a call 888-824-2014, you can see the other parts that we can provide for the Saginaw transmission on our site.

I have a 1957 Chevrolet 210 with 350 2WD

saginaw_transmission

Question:  Switching out my 3 speed to a 4 speed Saginaw using Summit Racing 700000 universal Kit. (Transmission not installed came out of a pre 60s car.) The reverse control shaft diagram shows neutral in the front position but only with this being in reverse position to the front, am I able to shift thru all the gears. Did some Saginaw have reverse towards the driver?

Answer:

This is all dependent on the shifter assembly itself. All of the Saginaw transmissions are the same.  You can see the part we supply for the Saginaw transmission on our site.
