1979 Quadravan Transmission Upgrade

I have a Quadravan on a Ford E350 conversion Van, 460 gas,4WD.

Question:  I am converting a 21′ R.V. to 4-wheel drive using a Quadravan conversion with probably a “205” transfer case and with a adapter plate if needed, I would like to use a ZF 6-speed transmission if it will handle the torque. I know the H.P. will be right around 740 and probably similar torque. Someone told me this would be a good choice. I zfs547don’t know anything about them? Maybe do your gear hardening on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd?   I need gear ratio choices, and keep in mind the rig weighs about 11,000 pounds.  I will run 29″ tires and a 410 rear which will help.

Answer:  Unfortunately there isn’t a way to adapt the ZF 6 speed to a 460 gas block application…

F250 Difference between ZF S542 ZF S547

I have a F250 7.3L diesel 2WD manual transmission

Question:  Please tell me what is the difference between ZFS542 and ZFS547.

Answer:   The S547 has a higher torque rating than the S542… the S547 has a different design to the syncro teeth. In our opinion both are adequate transmissions for your application.

Input bearing failure ZF-S547

I have a Ford F350 1997 2WD with input zfs547bearing problems


Question  I have this F350, engine has been enhanced slightly. Now there is a problem with the main bearing in the gearbox. it has broken down three times already, it only takes a few moments when it breaks down again (less than 500km). the last time we replace the bearing, box carefully cleaned and oils are certainly great quality. Now I wonder whether it would be too much engine power, or can be caused by a fault switch or lubrication? because the engine has been changed more powerful should the gearbox to make improvements?


There aren’t any updates to the bearings. Be sure to Merc V ATF in it and it is ok to overfill by a quart. It is also probable that there is  a pre-load problem (too tight) causing the premature failure.  See parts we provide for the Ford ZFS547.

Can you tell me the ratios that the Ford ZF547 was supplied with?

The Ford S5-47 ZF transmission was supplied in two different ratios: a  wide ratio and close ratio versions. The wide ratio was utilized in F-Series truck over 8500 lbs. gross vehicle weight (GVW), all engines  except F Super Duty equipped with a diesel engine.

The close ratio version was supplied in F-Series pickup trucks with a 7.3L diesel  GVW over 8500 lbs. The ratios are as follow:1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Reverse
Close Ratio (Diesel) 1st 5.08,  2nd 2.60, 3rd  1.53 , 4th 1.0 and overdrive 0.77, reverse is  4.66
Wide Ratio (Gasoline and Diesel) 1st 5.72, 2nd 2.94, 3rd  1.61, 4th  1.0 overdrive 0.76 and reverse 5.24
