ZFS650 shifter becomes sloppy in 5th gear

December 1, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have Ford F350 1999 speed 7.3L

Question:  I hope you can tell me if the problem that I have is critical or can wait. The transmission shifts easily in all gears, but when in overdrive, shifter becomes sloppy. when accelerating or decelerating, shifter will move about an inch or so at the top of the shifter. Transmission is a 6 speed. Truck has about 93,000 miles on it.

We would assume it is a combination of problems… The ZF 6 speeds are know for OD issues with gear wear, syncro wear and fork wear. We suggest you will need the following part:

  •  5th gear 54 Teeth part number 1319-303-052 your cost $234.25
  • 5th Hub part number TRS434606-5 your cost 84.94
  • 5th Slider part number TRS359642 your cost $48.53
  • 5th Fork part number TRS434845 your cost $50.23 plus S&H

There is a short throw shifter available your cost $195.00, plus freight. Give Scott a call 888-824-2012 he can help you.

November 26, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have a F350 Ford 6.0L 4WD

Question:  What are the differences in the ZF-6 trans’ between the 6.0 and the 6.4? Are they interchangeable? They call for the same clutch, but I’ve read that the input shaft is different…is that possible?

Answer: The ZFS650_MTFRD059Input shaft is longer on the 6.4L and the shifter location is further back. They are not interchangeable.

October 23, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have a F350 2004 6.0L 4WD

Question:  Why won’t a 2008 to 10 6.4 zf6 work in a 2003 to 2007 6.0? I have asked and looked n all I can find out is they will bolt up… also do 7.3s have the same bolt pattern on trans as 6.0 n 6.4? Just curious

Answer:   The 6.0l and the 6.4L use a different input shaft and output shaft so they are not compatible

The 7.3L is a different bolt pattern.

2000 Ford F450 ZFS-650 Shifting Problem

October 22, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have a Ford F450 7.3L 2WD.

Question  Hey a friend was driving ZFS650_MTFRD059truck and says he was in 5th gear, hear a pop and doesn’t have neutral anymore. When the shifter is in the neutral position it’s in low gear. All other gears work but it seems low is stuck engaged. Can this be a simple fix?

Answer:   Unfortunately this will not be an easy fix. It sounds like the 1st gear seized to the mainshaft. First thing is to drain the oil and see what the condition is and the level or lack of (oil). We have all of the parts to repair this unit but it would need to be disassembled to determine exactly what parts are needed.

We can provide a rebuilt dyno tested 6 speed transmission 2WD order our part number MTFRD058 your cost is $2526.67 plus a $1500.00 core deposit plus freight. This unit will have a one year warranty.

Ford ZF650 Manual Transmission Needs Rebuilding & Upgrading

May 13, 2014 - Author: bartbarton

I have a 2005 f250 6.0Lt Diesel with 600 horsepower.

Question:  During the ZFS650 overhaul I know its going to need synchro, i think a bearing or the shafts are getting some wear, and possibly thinking about a short throw shifter during the overhaul.  Can you offer any suggestions for the increase horsepower?

Answer:   We can rebuild and dyno test your ZFS650 6 Speed transmission, the transmission will be rebuilt under our part number MTFFRD076 your cost is $2526.67. plus freight and assumes your existing core case is not damaged.

To accommodate the additional horsepower we would recommend that we cryogenic treat the input shaft, 5th c/s gear, 4th gear set  and 3rd gear set for a total of 39lbs at $10 per pound = $390 additional cost this will add about 30% in additional strength.

We can install a short through shifter at the time of the rebuild your cost $195… just make sure you send your core with the shifter stub. You can see the other parts that we can supply for the Ford ZFS650 on our site.
