Dodge NP271 Sounds Like it’s Poping In & Out of Gear

February 17, 2014 - Author: bartbarton - No Comments

I have a 2005 Dodge 1 ton 3500 Diesel.

Question:

My Dodge trucks transfer case is an NP271 and sounds like it is poping in and out of gear.  Is this the chain slipping or is it something else?

Answer:

From your description of the problem it sounds like it could be the chain, based on our experience with the NP271 transfer case we would suggest you purchase the following parts for the overhaul:

  • Bearing Overhaul Kit NP271 our part number MWTBK485A your cost $196.67
  • Range Fork casting #41816 our part MWT482849K your cost is $50.00
  • Chain 1.5″ wide 49 links, our part number MWTCL10-64 your cost is $117/57 plus S&H.

Our technical expert is available to answer additional question or assist you in part diagnosis after tear down, call him at 888-824-2012.  You can see the other NP271 parts that we can supply on our site.
